What Did Bill Kasko Say About AI and the Human Side of Hiring?
Published on: Dec 21, 2025
Updated on: October 3, 2026
On the AI and Data Driven Leadership podcast, Bill Kasko told host Dean Guida that AI will change recruiting the way the microwave changed kitchens: useful, disruptive, and no replacement for people. Hiring still depends on empathy, judgment, and asking why. Frontline Source Group backs every direct hire with a 5-Year Placement Warranty.

Who is Dean Guida and what did this episode cover?
Dean Guida hosts AI and Data Driven Leadership, a show about how leaders use technology, data, and people to run better organizations. We recorded this conversation at the end of September 2025, during Frontline's 21st year in business, and it covered more ground than either of us planned: where AI helps hiring and where it falls short, how to tell whether a candidate really knows AI, why "why" is the best interview question, how we match people to company culture, and what job seekers should be doing right now.

Will AI replace recruiters?
No. My answer starts with a microwave. About 45 years ago my father brought home our first one, and it took four of us to carry it into the house. He told us that within a year or two, restaurants would not need cooks anymore. Forty-five years later, restaurants have plenty of microwaves, and they still need a chef. AI will disrupt how work gets done, and yes, it will eliminate some jobs, the way my old paper route disappeared. But we will adapt, learn to work alongside it, and get more efficient because of it.
AI is also making mistakes. It writes a lot of code, and a lot of that code needs fixing. You would not let AI file your taxes without someone checking them first, and hiring is no different. You still need a person looking over the work.
What can AI not do in hiring?
It does not have the human touch, and the part of hiring that depends on empathy and grace is still a person's job. If you place people a hundred at a time and only need to know they showed up, maybe that matters less. We place skilled professionals one at a time, and that conversation has to happen between people. As I put it on the show, "The one thing that we don't want to have happen with AI is that we forget about communication."
How does Frontline use AI in its own recruiting?
I am a tech guy, and we test new tools constantly, keep what works, and drop what does not. On the show I talked about Joy Lee, our virtual AI executive recruiter, who can interview candidates at any hour, including the middle of the night when that is what works for them. She is impressive, but she still lacks the human touch, so our recruiters own every relationship and every decision.
What has changed since the episode aired?
We have kept building. Lexi Reed, who started as our website chat assistant, is now a full AI recruiter. When a candidate applies for a job or uploads a resume, Lexi may call to conduct a phone interview and passes what she learns to our recruiting team. How did the 5-Year Placement Warranty start?
At a car dealership. We were buying our daughter her first car, a used one, and the finance manager mentioned it came with a five-year warranty. My daughter asked whether that was something we did. My first answer was no. Then I could not stop thinking: why not? Every business needs a way to stand out in a crowded market.
My management team thought it was the craziest idea they had ever heard. So I booked a room at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, and we stayed in it for a full day until we worked it out. The standard in staffing is a guarantee of 60 to 90 days, and the industry sells it on a negative: the assumption that people will fail. Our numbers showed something different. Our placements rarely failed. Far more often, they got promoted. So we built the warranty around that reality, and today every Frontline direct hire is backed by the 5-Year Placement Warranty, 20 times the 90-day industry standard. Program terms are at frontlinesourcegroup.com/5year-placement-guarantee.html.
Competitors told us we were going to ruin the industry. These days the warranty is also something we can tailor; some clients want five years and some want two. Either way, it shows we believe in the long-term investment. Not long ago, someone we placed 15 years earlier called to tell us they were retiring and their company needed a replacement. That is the outcome we build for.
Why does Frontline call it a warranty instead of a guarantee?
Because nobody can honestly guarantee the future. As I said on the show, "I can't guarantee I'm going to wake up tomorrow morning." A warranty describes what we will do if something goes wrong, and it is backed by a 98.94% executive placement retention rate.
How can employers test whether a candidate really has AI skills?
Every candidate now says they know AI, the same way every software company says its product has AI. The test is hands-on. Share a screen and ask the candidate to write a prompt, or to build something in a no-code tool while you watch. Ask to see agents, products, or workflows they have actually built, then validate them.
How do you spot AI-generated answers in a video interview?
Watch for one problem in particular. Some candidates have run AI in the background of a video interview to generate answers they read aloud. The fix is simple: ask them to do the work live, and for important roles, bring them in person. There is not yet a reliable off-the-shelf test for AI skill, so for now, practical exercises work better than any tool.
Why is "why" the most important interview question?
Because it cannot be answered with a yes or no. It shows how someone thinks. Instead of asking a candidate how they did something, ask why they worked on that project, why they want to join your company, and why they want to leave their current one. Employers should ask themselves the same thing: why is the position open, why has nobody been hired, and why do people leave?
One of my favorite examples: "Why didn't you go to college?" is a legal question, and it can open a door. A candidate might explain they were raised by a single mom, worked two jobs, and helped support a brother with special needs. That will never be on a resume, and it tells you a great deal about the person.
How does Frontline match candidates to company culture?
We built our own list of non-traditional interview questions that are fully compliant with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) guidelines, and we ask the same kinds of questions of our clients so we understand their culture before we talk to candidates. We now run those questions through AI regularly to find new angles worth asking about.
Why does Frontline require a discovery call?
We also require a real discovery call, usually 45 minutes to an hour, before we take a search. If a client just wants to send over a job description and get a body, we pass. When a company tells us three other agencies could not fill a role, my first question is why. Often the answer is that nobody took the time to understand the job.
What job search advice did Bill Kasko give?
Many people sat on the sidelines in 2025, afraid of being the last one hired before things turned. When you are ready to move:
- Be on LinkedIn. Keep your profile current, build toward 500 relevant connections, and engage with other people's posts. Our guide is at frontlinesourcegroup.com/linkedin-job-search-playbook.html.
- Clean up your online presence. Employers search social media and Google. Address anything negative before they find it.
- Use the job boards that still matter. At the time of recording, that meant Indeed and ZipRecruiter.
- Do not ghost anyone. Show up to interviews you agree to, and expect the same courtesy from employers and agencies.
- Send a handwritten thank-you note. Send an email right after the interview too, but handwritten notes get opened first. Here is how to write the email: frontlinesourcegroup.com/blog-thank-you-note-after-interview-email-subject.html.

Frequently Asked Questions: AI, Leadership, and Hiring
What did Bill Kasko discuss on the AI and Data Driven Leadership podcast?
Bill Kasko joined host Dean Guida to discuss why AI will not replace recruiters, how to test whether candidates really have AI skills, why "why" is the most important interview question, how Frontline matches candidates to company culture, the origin of the 5-Year Placement Warranty, and practical job search advice.
Will AI replace recruiters?
Bill Kasko compares AI to the microwave: it changed kitchens but restaurants still need chefs. AI will disrupt recruiting and eliminate some tasks, but hiring skilled professionals still depends on human judgment, empathy, and communication, and AI output still needs a person to check it.
What can AI not do in hiring?
According to Bill Kasko, AI lacks the human touch. It cannot show genuine empathy and grace or replace the conversations that reveal whether a skilled professional is the right fit. AI is useful for sourcing and screening, but people still need to make the hiring decisions.
How did Frontline's 5-Year Placement Warranty start?
The idea came from a car dealership, where Bill Kasko's daughter was offered a five-year warranty on her first car. Bill took his management team to Las Vegas for a day to work out how to offer something similar, built around data showing Frontline placements were more often promoted than replaced.
Why does Frontline call it a warranty instead of a guarantee?
Because no one can honestly guarantee the future. A warranty describes what Frontline will do if a direct hire does not work out. It runs five years, 20 times the 90-day industry standard guarantee, and is backed by a 98.94% executive placement retention rate.
How can employers test whether a candidate really has AI skills?
Use hands-on exercises. Ask the candidate to write a prompt or build something in a no-code tool on a shared screen, review agents or products they have built, and, for important roles, ask them to do the work in person to rule out AI-generated answers during video interviews.
Why is "why" the most important interview question?
A why question cannot be answered with a yes or no, so it shows how a person thinks. Bill Kasko recommends asking candidates why they took on a project or want to leave their job, and asking employers why a role is open or why people leave.
How does Frontline match candidates to company culture?
Frontline uses its own non-traditional, EEOC-compliant interview questions with both candidates and clients, refines those questions with AI, and requires a discovery call with every client before taking a search, so candidates are matched to the culture as well as the job.
What job search advice did Bill Kasko give?
Be active on LinkedIn with around 500 relevant connections, clean up your social media and search results, use the job boards that still matter, never ghost an employer, and send a handwritten thank-you note in addition to a prompt thank-you email.
Does Frontline Source Group use AI recruiters?
