How to Ensure Enough Coverage During Summer Months

Summer is finally here. And with it comes the increase in OOO messages and PTO requests. It's normal for your staff to want to take time off in the warmer months, especially if they have kids out of school. They may want to hit the beach or spend time with family. But how do you ensure you have the right coverage to run your business effectively when so many people are out? Here are some tips to get you started.

Limit People Out at the Same Time

You can set parameters for employees to take time off. It's okay to say that you need specific coverage in the workplace, and only a certain number of employees can be out simultaneously. For example, if you have a smaller office, you may only be able to have one employee out at a time. Or you could limit based on department.

Stagger Your Employees' Time Off

You can also encourage your employees to stagger their time off. For example, you can encourage everyone to take time off in conjunction with a holiday to maximize their PTO but have them select different holidays so you still maintain a core base of employees in the office at the same time.

Utilize Seasonal Temporary Staff

Another strategy many employers use is to hire short-term, seasonal staff to help out during the summer. This can allow your employees to get a break to rest and recharge while the work is completed. This is specifically helpful in volume-based environments.

Hire a New Team Member

It may be that your employees are spread too thin, and it's only exacerbated by the summer and higher production during the season. It may be time to bring in new talent to keep your team engaged and prevent burnout. You can work with a recruiter to help you find someone who will be a good match for your company culture and bring essential skills to the table.
