The battle to attract and hire top talent has made its way to the grocery industry. As the industry begins to stabilize in some respects following the COVID-19 pandemic, the labor market is an area that remains in flux. Frontline Source Group’s executive recruiter for grocery and retail, Mike Cook, also known as Grocery Store Mike, joined the SN Off the Shelf podcast by Supermarket News to discuss these challenges and how grocers can overcome them.

“I talk to retailers every day — it doesn’t matter the size of their organization. They have one thing in common and that’s the need for top talent,” Mike said.
Despite automation and technology playing an increasingly large role in day-to-day operations, Grocery Store Mike still believes strongly in the personal touch and customer service provided by having qualified individuals in your store. Mike also knows that these individuals aren’t simply walking into grocery stores looking for jobs anymore the way they used to.
“You have to be proactive in your search for employees. You can’t wait for that perfect employee to walk through your door anymore,” said Cook. “Instead, you got to go out and find them. And if you’re not capable of doing that, there are services out there that can do that for you. You have to think differently.”
