Staffing Agency Sees Increase in 'Internal Staff'

Staffing Agency Sees Increase in ‘Internal Staff’

In the last few weeks, Frontline Source Group [www.frontlinesourcegroup.com] has seen an increase in open wireless technology and programming positions. In fact, Bill Kasko, President of the Dallas-based staffing agency, said he has had to increase his internal staff to help fill all the positions.

“We’ve been beefing up our technology division, which has certainly driven business our way,” Kasko said. “However, our actions came in response to what we judged to be a rapidly expanding market.”

This “rapidly expanding market” resulted from the IT bust in the late 1990’s, when many programmers and developers left the business for good.

“People lost their jobs, their houses, the life to which they were accustomed,” Sherrie Dvorak, a recruiter at Frontline Source Group, said. “The market was unstable for too long, and so many people with marketable skills left the industry and moved into other fields.”

However, with current technologies continuing to expand, cutting-edge IT experts are in high demand. Sprint’s recent announcement of its plan to start running WiMax by next year, for example, will likely create even more of a demand for workers with wireless technology experience.

“It isn’t just Sprint,” said Dvorak, when asked about the reason for this sudden surge. “A lot of companies are trying to catch up with the newest wireless trends and create some of their own.”

One thing is certain, according to Mr. Kasko: as long as wireless technology demand is up, companies everywhere should be examining their current technology department.

“I include my company in that statement,” Kasko said. “We’re helping companies onto the wireless fast track, and we’re increasing our technology to help us accomplish that goal.”

How to Overcome the Un-Inquisitive Interviewer

Attacks in Lebanon, floods in Ethiopia and rising gas prices with no end in sight – these events are leading to an increasingly tight job market for many professions. With the job market shrinking, job-seekers may need to take some extra initiative during the interviewing process.

“If an interviewer isn’t asking you questions that allow you to draw conclusions about the company and position, then you need to question the interviewer,” Sherrie Dvorak, a recruiter at Frontline Source Group, said. “You have to stand out against other candidates, and sometimes you’ll need to ask some questions of your own in order to shine.”

Imagine Steve, a middle-age, middle of the road recently unemployed worker. Steve manages to land an interview with Company X. He excitedly gets ready, taking care to watch his appearance, bring copies of his resume, and prepare to answer a variety of questions.

Steve arrives ten minutes early. Bob, the interviewer, walks in and asks Steve how he is doing. Steve responds in kind, and the interview begins. However, much to Steve’s surprise, Bob asks only a few yes-or-no questions before ending the interview with “don’t call us, we’ll call you.”

What did Steve do wrong? Technically, nothing. If he showed up in flip flops, flaunted a colorful snake tattoo, or asked the receptionist for her number, then the answer would be clear. But if he dressed and behaved appropriately, there may be another factor to consider: the un-inquisitive interviewer.

“Interviewers are not perfect,” Sherrie Dvorak, a recruiter for Frontline Source Group, said. “The only question an interviewer has to answer is whether or not this candidate is right for this job. But sometimes, he or she does not know what questions to ask in order to get to the right answer.”

The interviewer, if he or she is smart, will ask pointed questions: Have you handled multiple projects with the same deadline? Can you tell me how you handled a last minute change to your project objectives? When was the last time you took a risk and failed? Questions such as these get at important job skills such as organization, flexibility and attitude toward risk.

If an interviewer is less experienced, however, he or she may not ask any specific questions. How, then, should a candidate respond to an interviewer who only touches on surface issues?

“Answer the questions they didn’t ask,” Dvorak said. She advises spending some time finding and answering difficult, specific questions before the interview. Then, compare the answers with the job description.

If the position requires multi-tasking, for example, or a technical skill, come up with a specific example from your past position that illustrates these qualities. Then, if the interview is wrapping up and you haven’t been given a chance to shine, take charge.

“Ask the interviewer: it seems like this position requires a lot of flexibility,” Dvorak said. “Is that right? Then follow up after their answer: Well, in my last job, I dealt with x, y and z in this way.”

“With enough effort, you can turn the most indifferent of interviewers to your side,” Dvorak said. “And if an interview does turn into a barrage of difficult questions, you’ll be able to answer with poise and intelligence.”

Big Changes Noticed in Job Marketplace

Three years ago when Bill Kasko, President of Dallas-based staffing agency Frontline Source Group Inc., was quoted in Computer World, the demand for Network and Java developers was limited. Today, he “can’t get enough of them.”

“Networking people are hard to find,” said Kasko. “There is an unexpected demand for not only Java, but also for software development experience with Qtopia, a system we had never heard of nine months ago.”

With the recent scandals that resulted in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, CEOs can now be held liable for mistakes made by their company’s accountants. Consequently, the demand for Internal Auditors has risen as company heads seek to protect themselves from possible prosecution.

“I would say the demand for Internal Auditors has more than doubled in the last four years,” Kasko said. “Of course, that is all because of Sarbanes-Oxley.”

The jump in demand for Java Developers and Qtopia experience is less cut and dry.

“Companies finally have the money to update their programs and website, but after the IT bubble burst in the nineties, many Java developers simply left the field,” Kasko said. “The problem is not finding people with past Java experience, but finding people with current Java experience who are looking for a change in position.”

For job seekers, the reasons for the jump in demand are not as important as the results: an increase in pay and long term opportunities.

“An Internal Auditor position that pays $75,000 today was paying at times up to 15% less four years ago,” Sherrie Dvorak, a recruiter at Frontline Source Group, said. “Internal auditors and Java Developers need to get their resumes out there. Even if you are already gainfully employed, there may be a better paying opportunity for you.”

Finding Java developers is hard at any price, according to Dvorak. “The skills are far and few between,” Dvorak said. “If you’re an experienced Java developer, or if you have worked with Symbian or Qtopia, we want to hear from you.”

The question job seekers should be asking is if this trend will continue, especially in relation to interest rates. Despite the Fed’s decision to keep interest rates the same, some say it is only a matter of time before rates rise again. Kasko expects even more changes since the Fed’s announcement.

“The Fed’s decision to pause interest rate increases puts companies in an odd position,” Kasko said. “There is an uncertainty in the market that we see reflected in our office.” Frontline Source Group, often asked to participate in the “Beige Book” economic survey, is often an accurate representation of market changes.

“When the Fed paused, the companies paused,” Kasko said. “But the IT and Auditing opportunities kept going because the bottom line is that the demand is still high.”

Gas Prices, Weather Slowing Summer Job Search

A summer lull in the job market is nothing unusual, but this year’s dip may be caused by more than summertime blues. Bill Kasko, President of Dallas-based staffing firm Frontline Source Group, Inc., blames the slow summer job market in part on high nationwide temperatures, rising gas prices, and vacations.

“Friday’s announcement that 113,000 fewer jobs were created than expected only confirms the trend we’ve been seeing for the past few months,” Kasko said, referring to the nation falling short of an expected 145,000 new jobs. “The Fed probably will not lower interest rates with the economy slowing down.”

His staffing agency saw similar trends three to six months ago with rising gas prices, Kasko said. “If energy costs weren’t double or triple the amount from a year ago, we most likely would not be in this situation.”

The Bureau of Labor reported annual average employment in manufacturing was above 17 million prior to the year 2000, before declining sharply. During 2005, manufacturing employment averaged 14,232,000. Kasko said he was not surprised.

“We’ve noticed it in our own company,” Kasko said. “Information Technology and Accounting/Finance are still strong as well as increases in salaries for mid to senior level professionals.” Kasko’s observation coincides with the July job report.”

“This is something that hasn’t happened for some time,” Kasko said. “Demand is still high.”

The job report indicated that 124,000 new positions were created in July. However, Kasko said he is uncertain about the accuracy of calling these positions new.

“Are new jobs truly being created, or are we just seeing a shuffle of empty positions finally being filled?” Kasko said. “I don’t know and only time will tell if this trend continues.”

Beating the Slump

With slower job activity, it is important to make the best of every opportunity. Many hope the job market will speed up again, leading the nation into a new age of productivity and progress. Until then, Sherrie Dvorak, recruiter at Frontline Source Group, offers these tips.

Review contact information, including e-mail address.

“An e-mail address such as ’XXXsexygurl’ is going to negatively change my opinion of you as I read your resume,” Dvorak said. “Also, make sure your phone number, address and e-mail address are accurate. If I can’t reach you easily, then I may give your perfect job to someone else.”

Persistence is critical.

“I don’t need you to call me every day, but once a week is good.” Dvorak said that many good candidates are not selected because they fail to follow up.

“It’s fine to say you are excited about the position during the interview, but if I don’t hear back from you, I’ll think your initial enthusiasm was insincere.”

List specific technical skills on your resume.

“We don’t want to hear that you’re an ‘energetic self-starter,’” Dvorak said. “We’ll determine your personality in the interview.”

Instead, Dvorak advised including in your resume any experience with Excel, expertise in an unusual database system, or examples of good communication skills.

Update your resume before posting it to job boards.

“I want to know what you’ve been doing for the last five to ten years, not 20 years ago,” Dvorak said. “Especially with huge technical changes, what you did 20 years ago is likely not relevant to what is being done today.”

She also pointed out that job boards are only a helpful resource if used correctly.

“Check the listings daily and refresh your personal posting to help land interviews,” Dvorak said. “If you don’t refresh regularly, employers may assume you have already landed a new position.”

As a final piece of advice, Dvorak asked candidates to follow the company’s application instructions to the letter.

“If a company says no PDFs, it means no PDFs; if it says no calls, it means no calls,” Dvorak said. “Trying to get around the system does not make you look good to a potential employer. In fact, it looks more like an inability to follow directions.”
