Fighting a Case of the Mondays? 5 Tricks to Keep You Focused

1. Sleep at night. I know, it’s what your mother has been telling you for years, but this time she is right. Sleep is essential for muscle regeneration, efficient memory, and – you guessed it – staying alert during the day.
“When you're asleep, it seems as though you are shifting memory to more efficient storage regions within the brain,” said Matthew Walker, PhD, director of BIDMC's Sleep and Neuroimaging Laboratory, as quoted by Science Daily. “Consequently, when you awaken, memory tasks can be performed both more quickly and accurately and with less stress and anxiety.”
If you have trouble falling asleep at night, set a reasonable bed time and get in bed every night at that time, including weekends. After a few weeks, your body will adjust to the new schedule. Also, avoid caffeine in the late afternoon, as it can interfere with the body’s natural sleeping pattern.

2. Drink coffee. Or coke, or Red Bull, or Green Tea – anything with caffeine will do. I realize this directly contradicts my first piece of advice, but realistically, no one goes to bed on time every night. Late night football games, weeknight birthday bashes, and sick kids are all a part of life. However, thanks to caffeine, these late night adventures do not need to interfere with your job performance.

3. Take a walk. Sitting in a chair all day blinking at a computer screen is not exactly a thrill ride for your body. So wake your body up with a little physical exercise, and take a five minute walk outside at lunch. Or, if you can not get away from your desk, stand up and stretch your arms and legs before getting back to work.

4. Take a trip down memory lane. A two minute daydream will not hurt; in fact, it might give you the mental break you need. Try and recall a specific event from your wild college days or a past vacation. Alternately, you could think about how you felt when you got your job in the first place. Where did you hope it would take you? Where are you now?

5. Consider getting a new job. If the above exercise depresses you – say, you started your job five years ago and are still waiting for that promotion – then it might be time to switch companies. Burst out of the corporate bubble, shake the dust off your resume, and check out all of your options.
“Once someone lands a position, he or she often forget that any other jobs
are out there,” said Sherrie Dvorak, a recruiter at Frontline Source Group in Dallas, TX. “Staffing agencies – such as Frontline Source Group – help remind people of all the possibilities still open to them.”

Simple Steps to Happy Employment

You are seated at the kitchen table on a Sunday morning, sipping some coffee and perusing the classified ads for a new job. “IT Developer” looks interesting, but so does the “HR Generalist” position and the call for “teachers needed.” Instead of making a decision, you pick up the phone and call a local staffing agency, right?

Wrong.

“It’s difficult to help people who call for a job with no clear position in mind,” said Sherrie Dvorak, a recruiter at Frontline Source Group in Dallas, TX. “We can not tell you what job will make you happy. If you can’t tell us what you’re looking for, then we are going to have a lot of trouble placing you.”

Unfortunately, while it is easy to look for a job, it is much more difficult to choose a specific line of work to actively pursue.

“All too often someone comes in with no perfect job in mind.” Ms. Dvorak said. “If you don’t know what you’re good at and what you enjoy, then the odds of you landing your ideal position are slim to none.”

The popular Meyers-Briggs personality test is a good starting point for any one trying to determine his or her ideal career fit. Please Understand Me: Character and Temperament Types by David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates is a good in-depth evaluation of personality types.

The internet also offers plenty of on-line quizzes which may help individuals choose a job. The site www.findyoursspot.com helps quiz-takers determine their ideal geographic location, an important variable many job seekers ignore.

In the end, however, no one can tell you which job is right for you. Relying on past experience is usually the best option.

“Define what you did and did not like in past work settings to create your ideal work environment picture,” said Susan Pines in an article on MSN.com. “If you have ever had a rotten boss or worked with a group of losers, you know why this is important.”

Ms. Dvorak agrees, adding that job hunters can take this a step further, evaluating not only co-workers and managers, but specific job aspects as well.

“Look at what you’ve enjoyed in the past, and ask yourself why,” Ms. Dvorak said. “If you liked your college waitress job, ask yourself what you enjoyed – the interaction with people, your co-workers, or tips received for a job well done?”

Evaluating these specifics, Ms. Dvorak said, can make the difference happy employment and daily tedium.

“If your goal is gainful employment, set up a plan of action with a specific end in mind,” Ms. Dvorak said. “Settling for any job you can find will likely only disappoint you and your employer.”

Business Etiquette: Common courtesy gets an MBA

The word “etiquette” often brings to mind a gawky pre-adolescent balancing a book on her head. However, in the business world, etiquette involves far more than choosing the correct fork, and it can make – or break – a deal.

“Much business etiquette is the same as common courtesy,” Sherrie Dvorak, senior recruiter at Frontline Source Group in Dallas, said. “Be polite, arrive promptly. It should be common sense.”

Dvorak agreed with Clarence Thomas that “good manners will open doors that the best education can not,” as she recalled past interviews, where candidates arrived several hours late or not at all.

“I do not care how well qualified you are,” Dvorak said. “If you arrive late without calling or are rude on the phone or in person, you will find yourself perpetually unemployed.”

Her advice? “If you have to be late, then call.” Dvorak said. “But my best advice is to be on time. Punctuality is the first step to telling a potential employer that you respect the interviewer and the company.”

Basic rules for interviewing are easy enough to find, but once you land a job, the dos and don’ts for intra-office communication are a little trickier. New employees often wonder whom to introduce first in a given situation and when to move to a first name basis.

Ann Sabath, author of Business Etiquette, offers a few basic rules for such situations: in an introduction, mention the name of the person of higher status first, and do not move to a first name basis until invited to do so.

“Go with the flow of your office,” Dvorak said. “But be careful. In business, it is better to err on the side of too polite than too casual.”

Dorothea Johnson, the founder of the Protocol School of Washington, as quoted by the New York Times, said, “I’m hearing more and more from top executives that the people skills are very important, in many cases more important than the technical skills.”

“The bottom line is that advice on business etiquette is easy to come by,” Dvorak said. “Buy a book or search the internet, but do yourself a favor and learn the basics. You will never regret it.”
