It's Not What You Say, But How You Say It

Interviews are often the best way to prove that you are the ideal candidate for a given open job. But be careful! While on paper you look like an ideal match, the interview process gives recruiters and human resource professionals the opportunity to see if you personality is going to be a match for the organization. What you say and how you say it has an immense value to how you are going to be perceived by the future employers. Think before you speak or act; the following are just a few examples of how interviews make or break you.

Avoid the use of cliches! How many times have we interviewed people who claim that their weakness is that they are perfectionists or workaholics. This "weakness" has likely been mentioned to the hiring professional a dozen or so times before they have ever spoken to you. Lines like "I believe in teamwork" or "I'm very detail oriented" are not going to impress anyone. Instead of tired cliches, discuss your experiences. For example, instead of claiming that you have outstanding customer service skills, you explain what you did and how you did it. Don't try to look perfect - explain how you improve and what lessons you have taken along the way. Nothing will make the eyes roll more than an entire interview where you hear every cliche in the book. Don't be cliche - be yourself.

Don't be afraid to toot your own horn. The point of an interview is to get the job. Discuss your major educational or career achievements. No one else will do it for you, so be prepared to discuss accomplishments that make you proud and show your love for your profession. Showing the passion for what you have done in the past and what your goals are for the future instill a sense of comfort for hiring professionals looking for candidates that will be an asset to their company. If you can show evidence of your value to past companies, the hiring professionals have a glimpse of what you can do for them.

Don't lie. It's far too easy to do a reference check or background check to see what you might have really done in the past. Honesty truly is the best policy. If you lie, there is a strong likelihood that the truth may come out during the hiring process. A lack of trust in the candidate will kill any job offer.

Be realistic in laying out your salary requirements. Don't go too low, or you won't get what you deserve. On the flip side, don't aim too high, as it can prevent you from many other opportunities. Do some careful market research and look at your salary history. From these numbers, you should determine a fair asking price range (keep it within $5,000 to $8,000) for your services. Over the course of the interviewing process, make sure these numbers are not changing. Once you have a good sense of the duties included, you should set your requirement and keep it steady. Fluxuations may cause eyebrows to raise if you continue to change throughout the interviewing stages.

Your image counts too. While a phone interview allows candidates the ability to sit at home in their pajamas while interviewing, an in-person interview opens the door for great image discrimination. If your image is out of line with the company, the positive direction of the interview can come to a dead stop. When the company is business professional and you show up in a ratty t-shirt and jeans, your chances die. Think carefully about what you wear. Even if the company is very casual, for the interview you are there to make an impression. Think about what current employees wear, and then dress at least one level more professional than they do. Keep hairstyles, jewelry, and makeup professional and unobtrustive - classic is always the way to go. There's a great reason why people say to dress for success. But it doesn't stop in the interview. For employees that continue to dress as though they are in higher positions, research has shown that these people see more promotional opportunities and greater increases in their pay too.

Be confident. In speaking about your skills, your experience, your education, you knowledge - the more confident you sound, the better you can keep the attention of your interviewer. Keep your answers concise, to the point, and honest, but don't sound as if you question anything you have done. Confidence helps to determine whether or not the job offer will come. Act and speak in confidence and they hiring professionals will place more confidence in your application and abilities.

Taking these few steps can make the difference of receiving or losing out on a job offer. Remember, without doing your homework on the company, you may lose out on key facts. Know what you are you interviewing for, prepare your interviewing presentation styles, and hopefull you are then on your way to a new job.

Key Things to Know Before You Begin Your Job Search

Nearly everyone has been in the position before where they know it's time to find a new job but they have absolutely no clue of where to begin. The following are essential steps to be taken before engaging in a full-fledge job hunt to ensure that you are on the right path.

1. Have an idea of what you want to do. List things that you are good at doing and things you enjoy doing. Take these functions and build a search around them. Really focus on the aspects that matter most to you - such as using your education, enhancing your different skills, or adding to your portfolio. Take note of what really interests you and aim for jobs in those fields. Very few people end up satisfied in a job where they have no interest in what they do - avoid this pitfall.
Too often in our office, we have people come in to interview that do not have any idea of what they really want to do. They expect us to tell them - but we can never know what they are thinking. Know what you want before you ever interview with anyone. Being prepared to discuss your likes and dislikes can keep you out of a job that could have been a nightmare.

2. Take note of what really motivates you and search for jobs that contain your primary motivators. Whether it's the salary range you are looking for, the top notch benefits, or the satisfaction you get in performing certain duties, make sure that these top motivators are included in your next job so that you find the satisfaction that will keep you excited in going to work daily.
Without having certain motivators, it's very easy to become disillusioned by the job. At this point, performance slides, the "I don't care" attitude comes up, and neither the employer or you will be happy. Before jumping on board, make sure the job can give you the motivational factors that will help you succeed.

3. Note the location. Very often, people focus on the job, the money, or the company name, yet they totally overlook the duration of the commute. Especially for people that have intense road rage or people who hate driving, it would be smart to limit your commute to less than a half hour for each leg. For total road warriors, people who very much enjoy a long daily commute, working next door would take away from a happy part of your day. Think about what you want from your commute - the roads you drive, the length of the trip, etc. It all plays into how your day ends or begins, so consider this aspect well.
I have seen people leave dream jobs because they can't stand their hour long daily commute. It leads to burnout, frustration, and hostility towards the job. Consider the map before considering jobs. A dream job that's 50 miles away may not be the dream job that you thought it was.

4. Think about the type of people with whom you enjoy working. Your co-workers can make a job great or make it seem like the worst job ever. Consider the types of people you work with before you accept a job. If you are interviewing with a company, take notes on everyone. How was the receptionist that greeted you? How was your interviewer? If you meet other people, think about how they respond to you? Does the company take a team or individualistic approach? People can make or break your job - consider who you liking working along side of before ever blindly accepting a job.
How often have you complained about your boss, your team, or the guy in the cube next to you. Think about it - you spend more time at work with your co-workers that you do with your family. If you are stuck with colleagues that are people who you can not stand, how are you going to want to go to work on a daily basis? Disharmony before the job ever begins is definitely a reason to reject a job offer.

Before you ever begin your job search, the most important thing you can do for yourself is to look out for yourself. Keep these 4 major points in mind before jumping into your next job and you will find yourself in a happier job life. If you don't look out for these factors, it's doubtful that anyone else ever will. So keep your options open and shoot for what is your current dream job. It is, afterall, a candidates' market. Take the job you want!

How to Hire a Loser…

There are many things that companies consider when making their hiring decisions. The greatest mistake that they make though is that they often are not considering the person in relation to the job and the company to the best of their abilities. This is how you hire a loser. Here are a few common mistakes that companies make in their hiring process which brings in bum employees instead of the stars that they initially believe that they are hiring.

No job description or analysis This is potentially one of the greatest components involved in the hiring process. Without this key information, those people in charge of hiring are not considering the whole picture. Certain duties, knowledge, or experience is easily overlooked if a full job description is not used in selecting employees to take over the given open position. How can you do a full job match with the candidates if you do not know what the job totally encompasses? It is an absolute must to know educational and experience requirements, all job duties and functions, and who this person works with and reports to in the job. Without the job description, it is very likely that you will hire a loser.

Overlooking reference checks or background checks This is one way that you could end up with an employee that you otherwise would not want. Business references will often tell you the ugly truth. If they were great or horrible, you will hear about it here! You could miss pertinent information if you do not speak with others who worked closely with the individual seeking the job. Also, if the candidate will not give a reference, this is very good evidence that they know that no one can speak favorably of them. Also, a criminal background will come up in the background check, which some people prefer not to disclose where they are legally responsible to do so. Failing to perform this step could end up making the company liable in a worst-case situation. Without the background information, you could very well end up with a loser employee.

Not interviewing or screening candidates fully The interview process is highly important in the selection of future employees. Substantial information comes out of interviews. Learn about who people are, what their skills are, what their personality is like, etc. This all affects how people will react in the work scenario. If the interview provides you with answers that would have saved you from ever bringing that person into your office, wouldn’t you rather take that half hour to qualify or disqualify the candidate legitimately? Ignore this step, and you could end up with a loser.

How can you ensure that you hire a star candidate? The easiest way to do this is to speak with a Staffing or Placement Agency. Qualify the agencies that you are considering and make sure that they cover all the bases. A good staffing agency should have phone screened and interviewed thoroughly all candidates that they send out. They should also take care of performing reference and background checks. The agency should request a job description so that they can perform the search to the utmost of their abilities. And above all, the agency should treat candidates and clients with an excellent level of professionalism and integrity. Acting legally and ethically is an expectation that companies assume, but many agencies do not act well in these regards. Be sure that the agency that you decide to work with observes EEO requirements and acts in the best interest of your search. If you select your agency properly, you should have no problem in hiring star employees from there on out.

It May Be a Candidate's Market Now, BUT...

While the unemployment number have recently shown steady decreases, and finding top talent is becoming harder than ever, there's no time to be lazy in your job hunt. Between 2006 and 2010, you should be developing your skills, enhancing your knowledge and gaining valuable experience because our job market will steadily increase to where opportunity can knock at every door. By 2010, we are expecting to see 11,000,000 open jobs as baby-boomers are beginning to retire. Building your resume now will help you gain one of these amazing jobs down the road, but... what you do now, may determine the path you take.

Especially if you are going to be living in the same city for the next few years, it is crucial to remember that companies network and your laziness in the job hunt can haunt you. Merely no-showing to interviews with companies can leave you blacklisted by several other companies. Remember, HR and hiring personnel often do a great deal of networking. By skipping out on a job interview opportunity without warning, your unprofessional actions can come back to bite you when these hiring decision makers discuss names and history.

Also, lying on your resume is a huge mistake. As companies network and maintain communications, there is a very high likelihood that your embellishments may become known by both parties. This taints the opinion of your past employer and increases your rejection chances by the potential employer. If you can not remember exact titles and duties, please call your ex-HR rep and confirm the details. While you might think that one thing sounds better than another, you may be actually killing your chances of winning your current dream job.

Remember, people talk and cities may not be as large as you might expect! Laziness and a lack of trustworthiness for one day of your life could really affect you for years down the road. Recruiters with Frontline Source Group have noticed a huge influx of interviews not showing up for interviews with potential employers. This not only makes a huge black mark on the file with the recruiting firm, but with the employer at hand as well. Always note, that bad news travels much faster than good news, and this is an easy way to poison your job hunt and drag it on far longer than it would have otherwise. It would be far better to spend a half hour practicing your interviewing skills and thanking the interviewer for meeting with you (and then rejecting the job offer if you're not interested) than to get that horrible black mark on your file for being lazy and not showing up.

Also, when applying for jobs, please mention to your references that you are planning to use them as a resource. Nothing is more shocking to a recruiter than to make a call in regards to a reference check when the person supposedly offering the reference can not even remember who you are. This says a great deal to the employer about you (especially your poor ability to follow up with people that you deem important in your career history). This is not an area where you can afford to be lazy. A reference check can help make or break your offer. Remember to ask your references first, and follow up with a "thank you for your time" note. And please, in regards to choosing references, more value is given to people that you have worked with you extensively, over a long period of time. These are valuable people to keep in touch with, even after your work together ends.

While it may be a candidate's market right now, you must remember to walk carefully, truthfully, and with determination to prove that you are right for the job. Follow through is the most important aspect to your job hunt. With 11,000,000 jobs opening up just around the corner, it would be a shame to close the doors on that opportunity needlessly. Show up, be honest, and follow through... more opportunities await if you follow these 3 steps - you can really then take advantage of the candidate's market.
