2 Steps Forward and 1 Step Back... Changes in the Workplace

As a long-term job draws to a close, whether quitting, suffering through layoffs, or being fired, employees are often unprepared to face the reality of a new job search. There are many factors that people merely tend to overlook completely and many incorrect assumptions are easily made in the fast transition that people often endure. While the thought of progressing in one's career is a positive idea, the likelihood of making the huge change that candidates often make is that they find it easy to overestimate their experience, ability, and value in the workplace. Let's be sure to really understand these key aspects before facing the open job market.

Often employees that have remained with a given company for an extended period of time tend to see technical skills fall by the wayside. If you are new to the market, it is crucial to examine current technical requirements and trends in your given field. If you see a trend asking for skill with a program, check out local community colleges or technology centers to enroll in some basic training. While it may eat up some weekend time, this training is priceless to the continuation of your career. Train yourself in new and currently demanded skills to remain a hot commodity!

Enhance your resume! Go out and seek new certifications, take some continuing education courses, or train on some new tasks. Taking these courses of action are beneficial for a couple of reasons. First, it makes you up-to-date with the current work trends. It makes you worth more (in regards to compensation potential) in the job market. Also, it adds to the fact that you are eager to do whatever is necessary to get a job and to do it well. This too, prepares you for a potentially very new work experience that you could never have had without this new training.

Assess your asking price in regards to your salary requirement. All too often, when a person is with a company for a very long time, raises attribute to higher-than-market expectations for that positions that you might choose to do following the departure from the long term job. Study up on job boards. Check out similar positions to that which you just left and examine whether or not your expectations are reasonable. On the flip side, some companies just don't give raises, and you could easily be on the very low end of the market. Check out what's current before you set your requirements with potential new companies or with search firms.

Take some time and look at the current scenario... it could be very valuable to the future of your job search and the time that it takes to succeed. Make sure you move forward and take something away from your time unemployed... it could be more valuable to you than you think.

10 Commandments to Writing a Great Resume

With unemployement at lows not seen since 2001, the resume is the most important tool a job seeker has to get noticed. Unfortunately, we see resumes everyday with errors that reduce a candidate's chances of being considered by a potential employer. If you really want to be considered for a job, the resume must be flawless! Here are a few ways to make sure your resume catches an employer's eye.

1. Spellcheck - and don't just rely on your computer to catch every mistake. Words that you type may not be true misspellings, however they may be the wrong word, and they will make you look as though you did not spend the time proofreading your resume.
2. Don't be redundant. If it only takes one sentence to explain your duties, use only one sentence. Keep it short, sweet, and to the point.
3. Be honest! Don't make up dates, titles, duties, etc. If you lie, employers could very easily find out while doing reference checks. If you explain gaps of unemployment, full range of duties, and the value of your title, there's no reason to embellish.
4. Put all of your contact information at the top of the resume. Many employers have a preferred means of communication, so please include mailing addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers if you want to be contacted for a great new job opportunity. Most importantly, make sure the information is CURRENT!
5. If you include a cover letter, make sure that the job you are applying for is the job you allude to in the letter. Don't make it too general or too specific to a different job. Take the time to change titles!
6. Your resume is the first thing an employer will see... if you have certain skills that the employer would want, please make sure you include it in the resume. If you do not have that one key ability, you could weed yourself out of the running... if you have it, include it.
7. It's not about the length! Be concise and precise. Don't give your entire life story, just provide the salient information.
8. Grammar is just as important as spelling. Simple mistakes can cast your resume aside.
9. Do not include things that are not needed. "References upon request" IS NOT NECESSARY! This is obvious and all hiring personnel know they have to request your references. It takes up space and is pointless. Another thing that isn't necessary would be having colors on your resume. It doesn't make you stand out - it's just annoying to the people reading the resume. Black and white print only, please! Also, do not include anything that would give employers a reason to discriminate: marital status, age, size, hobbies, your picture... all of these things will hurt you more than they will help you.
10. Use proper English. Slang words just "don't cut it." When speaking on the phone or via email, speak clearly and properly. This is not a chat room, so do not abbreviate as if you were in one (i.e. "u gots any jobs", "thx", "i c u have this job open.") Proper English makes you look like a stronger candidate - stronger candidates are the people to be hired.

Does Your Email Address Define You?

While contact information is a vital component to your resume, beware that your email address can actually hurt your chances of getting your dream job. Your resume is a company's first chance to get to know you - do you really want to portray yourself as dumbblond1, godsgift2women, potsmoker5, or beerguzzler123 at yahoo, hotmail, gmail, aol, etc? Don't blow your first impression with a possible employer in the first couple of lines in your resume.

Jobseekers, especially people new to the job market, often do not realize what their creative or "fun" email addresses do to their career. There are key questions that you should address before you put your current email address on top of your resume and send it out to potential employers. First, does my email address send the right message to employers? Will my address make it by all spam filters based on any negative language content? Ask yourself "can this address be deemed as inappropriate?" If you are not certain, we encourage you to go to a website and create a free, work appropriate email address for use during your job hunt.

If your email address alludes to your body type, gender, age, race, religion, or your recreational preferences, you would be best to create a new, discrimination-free address. If you give an employer ammo to be turned down, chances are, you will be. On a daily basis, our firm sees dozens of email addresses that really make the recruiters raise their eyebrows and doubt the candidates' values. Don't let this happen to you...
